THANKS TO THOSE WHO CARE ABOUT OSCOTT

On behalf of all the Oscott Residents Groups (ORG) I would like to thank all the Oscott Ward Councillors for work they have done for local residents over the last year. Councillor's Dring, Green (and before him Cotton) and Councillor Linnecor have all work hard on behalf of residents and never get enough praise.
We would particularly like to than Councillor Linnecor for Chairing some of our joint meetings in such a positive but neutral way. We would also like to thank him for the many occasions he popped in to see us at our drop in sessions.
ORG would also like to thank all those Council officers and other Authority representatives who worked on our behalf during the year.
Finally we would like to thank all those residents who got involved and tried to improve the area we live in.

May we wish every one a Happy Christmas and New Year.

From the ORG

PS. We wish Khalid Mahmood MP a speedy recovery.

BE SAFE AT NIGHT.

During the winter when the nights are so long we all need to be on our guard against crime.

The Neighbourhood Police Initiative would just like to remind you of some simple precaution to avoid being a victim of crime at this time of year.

  1. Never leave Xmas presents on show in your car when you leave it. DO NOT FORGET TO LOCK IT.
  2. Always leave a light on at night when you go out. (Try using a timer switch?)
  3. Keep all doors, windows ,sheds and garages locked at night in particular.
  4. Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home if you are away.
  5. Keep an eye of your purse or wallet and bags when out shopping.
  6. Avoid unlit alley ways.
  7. Don't leave Sat Nav's in you car.
  8. Always check the Id of any one you do not know before you let them in your home. If in doubt call the Police.
  9. Ask the Police for Crime prevention information.
  10. If you see a crime happening do not leave it to others ring 999.

Remember most types of crime is falling in this area and it is a safe place to live, so do not worry to much. Enjoy your Christmas and New Year.

WE WANT PUBLIC TOILETS ON HAWTHORN ROAD

I have written this letter to the Great Barr Observer also.

I am surprised and disappointed that at in this day and age there is still so little consideration, in some quarters for those who are elderly or disabled.
There are for example some residents, as well as the Birmingham City Council, who do not seem to care, that there are no public toilets in our area, notably on the Hawthorn Road .
For many Disabled residents who use the shops there, the thought of having no toilets available, when they shopping is very off putting.
As Councillor Linnecor quite rightly said recently “the local shops in our area need more support and one of the things which may help get more people to shop locally is having a public toilet on the Hawthorn Road.”
Many other things need to be done. I agree there is need for more variety of shops particularly on Hawthorn Road for example.
However until this Council begins to care about this area and improve thing’s like parking, cleanliness and the lack of public toilets , I fear for all Councillor Keith Linnecors hard work trying to promote local shopping in the area, there will be even more shops being lost.

WE DO NOT WANT SKATE BOARD IN OSCOTTS NATURE RESERVE

The Oscott Residents groups fully support the Friends of the Queslett nature Reserve in their demands that no Skate Board Centre be allowed on the Queslett nature Reserve.
A Skate Board Centre would ruin the Reserve and after all the hard work put in by the Friends of the Queslett nature Reserve that would be a disgrace.
Perry Barr Park is a far better place to have a skate Board Centre and we are behind the campaign to have one put there.

WHY ARE OUR PAVEMENTS IN OSCOTT SO POOR

There are a lot of elderly and disabled residents in Oscott and for them the state of our pavements is of great concern.
The various Community Groups which make up the ORG are all calling on this Council to get their act together and start improving our pavements. It is no good just putting a chalk mark on the pavement we need them repaired.
The state of our pavements has deteriorated over the last 2 or 3 years and want them brought back to at least the standard prior to that.

KESTON ROAD GATES A SUCESS

Thanks to the tireless campaigning efforts from Brian Stevens (who has now become a committee member of the Oscott Residents Association) we the help of Councillor Linnecor, new fencing and a kissing gate have been put up at the Keston Road entrance to the King George Playing Fields.
They were needed as motor bikes were getting onto the field at this entrance and youths were hanging about as a result.

SAY NO TO MORE TAKE AWAYS IN BURNHAM ROAD

The ORG are fully behind residents demands that no more Takeaways are allowed in the group of shops at the corner of Burnham Road and Birdbrook Road.
We have objected strongly to the Planning department about the proposed planning application at 103 Burnham Road for example.
There are to many take aways in this group of shops. The parking there is very poor, there are gangs hanging around already and litter would become even more of a problem if a new Take Away was allowed.

WE SUPPORT COUNCILLOR KEITH LINNECOR'S SAVE OUR SHOPS CAMPAIGN.

The Oscott Residents Groups are all fully behind Councillor Keith Linnecors attempts to encourage local resident to use local shops.
We all need to think about how we can support our local shops, as we all may need them at some time.
Lets think local shops and well done Councillor Keith Linnecor for trying to bring this issue to everyones notice.

The Oscott Disability Group are continuing to campaign with Councillor Linnecor for more Disabled bay markings and Disabled Drop Curbs.

ODG Chair George Hough Say's "We are pleased that Councillor Linnecor is carrying on the fight with us, as these disabled facilities are really needed. Those disabled residents who have cars, need to get as near to the shops as they can and motorised scooter users, need to be able to get up and down our pavements, on their journey.

OSCOTT WARDEN WHAT IS THE FUTURE?

The ORG have been informed that the Oscott Environmental Warden Deborah Parsons has left for pastures new. This is a great disappointment to us as she worked so well with all of our groups.

FLY TIPPING IS A DISGRACE

In a City like Birmingham where we have a free bulky item collection service and a number of easily accessible Salvage department where rubbish can be taken, it is a disgrace when anti social residents fly tip.
ORG strongly believe the Birmingham City Council should do all in its power to catch and prosecute fly tippers.
For example just look at Booths Lane. There is a camera there to help identify the culprits and still they fly tip. It is time naming and shaming took place also.

WHAT IS THE OSCOTT RESIDENTS GROUP?

THE OSCOTT RESIDENTS GROUP IS- THE INFORMAL LINKING TOGETHER OF- THE OSCOTT RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION, THE NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE INIATIVE, THE OSCOTT ELDERLY RESIDENTS GROUP AND THE OSCOTT DISABILITY GROUP.
(There are a number of other local community groups with co opted status)

Senior members of the groups within the ORG structure meet regularly to discuss issues of mutual concern and to plan activities jointly.

For example
Planning campaigns and organising joint meeting.
Lobbying
Producing leaflets
Sharing experiences and problems on behalf of their members and the community
Holding a drop in session (On Saturday mormings 10.30am at the 610 Community Centre.) where residents can meet and discuss their concerns informally with members of ORG.

WHY ARE THE TREES IN COURTENAY ROAD NOT BEING PRUNED?

Along with the Oscott Central Neighbourhood Forum we are demanding an explanation from the Council's Tree section as to why only 4 Trees in Courtenay Road have been pruned. This is simply not good enough given the state the remaining trees are in and we want answers.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THIS COUNCIL AND BIRDBROOK ROAD

The ORG and local residents are fed up with this Council and its lack of action regarding , speeding , parking and the state of the carriageway in Birdbrook Road. It is time they took action and dealt with these issues.
ORG agree with Councillor Keith Linnecor's comments in the Great Barr observer recently when he said" the SuttonColdfield College should get on and have their new building build further down the College Road , as the current site is causing so many parking problems with its students parking" we also agree with his comments that action to ease the problem is needed now.
The state of carriage way and speeding problems are simply being ignored by the Council and it is not good enough. We will continue to ask the Council to take action and will work with the Osccott Central Neighbour Hood Forum to this aim.

Councillor Keith Linnecor often finds time to come and listen to what we and local residents have to say at these meetings.

FUNDING FOUND TO HELP OLDER RESIDENTS IN THE OSCOTT WARD

The ORG are all member of the Oscott Ward Advisory Board and were pleased to give our opinion when it came to allocating funding at the last meeting of the board.
All those who took part in this meeting were keen to use some of the 16 thousand ponds which was available for funding, to schemes for the elderly.
Age Concern now have funding Approx 10 thousand pounds for their befriending. Handy man and Gardening projects. The Perry Barr Elderly residents Forum also received 500 pounds.
Those present at the meeting were Councillor Linnecor (Chair). Councillor Dring, Representatives from Age Concern the Police. ORA, OERG, ODG, NPI, N.W and local Neighborhood Forums.Council officers were also there to offer advice.

KEEP OUR LIBRARIES IN GOOD REPAIR

The Oscott Residents Groups members are angry that the Council has let the Perry Common Library get into such a state of disrepair that it has had to close for repairs until next year. What is happening to our library service? this Council only seem to care about grand schemes like their proposed new Central Library. We in Oscott demand and expect our share of the library funds to keep our libraries (including the Kingstanding Library in good condition.

NOVA COURT JUNCTION ACTION AT LAST IT SEEMS

Those bureaucratic Councils Transportation departments at Sandwell and Birmingham have finally, we have been informed got their acts together and have sanction new traffic lights going in at the Nova Court Junction of the Queslett Road. Lets just hope they do the job properly (we can at least hope) and the junction is at last made safe as soon as possible.

NEW BIRD AND BAT BOXES FOR QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE

ORG members were delighted to help out the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve and help put up a number of Bird and Bat boxes around the Queslett Nature Reserve.

The wild life needs all the help it can get in the reserve following the shameful descion by a majority on the Birmingham Planning committee to allow near by land to be developed.

This fortunately has not yet happened and this is giving the FOQNR and our selves the opportunity to do something to help the reserves wild life in advance of the development.

ORG PUBLIC MEETING A SUCESS MARRED BY A SAD ANNOUNCEMENT

ORG would like to thank Khalid MahMood MP for attending our meeting on Saturday as guest speaker. We appreciate how busy he is and were very pleased he gave his time for our meeting. He made a valuable contribution and was prepared to answer a number of difficult questions from the audience.
We would also like to thank Councillor Keith Linnecor for doing such a good job as the Chair of the meeting and keeping everyone in order. We were also grateful that the Police, Councillor Green and Councillor Dring also attended our meeting. However we were discus ted that no one from the Birmingham City Councils Transportation could be bothered to turn up and feel this is becoming the norm for that this shows their lack of interest in the Oscott area.

ORG members were sorry to hear of the death of Gib Mckay who was the Secretary? minute taker of the Kingstanding Pensioners Convention.
Gib For many year had helped run the KPC and did a lot of hard work to promote the rights of local pensioners. His family have our sympathy and condolences.

The Oscott Residents Groups (The Oscott Residents Association, The Oscott Elderly Group, the Oscott Disability Group and the Kingstanding Neighbourhood Initiative are holding a Public meeting at the 610 Community Centre at 2.30pm on Saturday 16th August.

We have invited all the Oscott Councillors, the Police, various Council officer and as a guest speaker Khalid Mahmood M.P.

What we want to know is what the Council is going to do about issues in Oscott like the state of some of our concrete Road?
Why have so many of our requests for road safety improvements been ignores by the Council.
When will all homes in the area get recycling boxes?
What are the Police doing to combat anti social behavior?

We are pleased to say that Councillor Keith Linnecor has agreed to chair our meeting.

If you would like further information please ring 464 1869

There are a number of other resident groups in the area which work in co operation with ORG and they will be asked to attend this meeting.

ITS TIME THE COUNCIL ROAD ENGINEERS AND THEIR LEADERS LISTEND.

The non appearance of the Birmingham City Councils Transportation department at last weeks Oscott Ward Committee is a disgrace.
Councillors ask these Officers to attend, to listen to our concerns on important issues like the Nova Court Junction and the dangerous state of Booths Lane and they fail to turn up.

The Oscott Residents Association have also again called upon the Birmingham City Transportation department to take action to reduce the amount of speeding traffic on the Aldridge Road.
Chair Nigel Quinn say "Only the other day there was a Police chase on the Aldridge Road, which involved speed Quad bike. Every day many of those living on the Aldridge Road expect to see or hear of another accident on the Aldridge Road. Safety measure are badly needed on this road"

SAVE OUR WARDEN

The Oscott Residents Groups are completely opposed to any City wide plan to change how Environmental Wardens operate. Wardens should work in a particular ward (like the one is Oscott does) where they can pick up local knowledge which will help them in their job.
We say leave our Warden alone to get on the job of keeping Oscott clean and ask the Council not to make any changes.

BOOTHS LANE CARRIAGE WAY, AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN

The state of the carriage way in Booths Lane is disgusting. We feel the Council should make the owner of this land repair his carriageway immediately before there is an accident.
Various members have reported the state of this carriage way to the Transportation department on a number of occasions but it looks as if they will wait for an accident to happen before they do any thing.
If you have to use Booths Lane take great care.

TO SAVE GREENHOLM POST OFFICE NEEDS COMBINED EFFORT

The ORG call again on all Councillors in the area to combine forces to try and save the Greenholm Road Post Office. Letters like those from Councillor Green in the Great Barr Observer 18th July 08, do not help and we hope he thinks again and works with the other Oscott Councillors, to save our Post office. We must all work together to stop the Post Office Counters closing the Greenholm Road Post Office.

SAVE GREENHOLM POST OFFICE

ORG on behalf of all its members call upon the Post Office not to close the Greenholm Post Office.
This Post office is well used by the community and is a life line to many elderly residents in the area. The Owners do not want to loose the Post Office facility and we support them.
Please sign the petition being organised by the Local Councillors and write to the Post Office Counters Ltd to object.

MORE FUNDS FOR THE YOUTH AND OTHERS IN OSCOTT

The Oscott Residents Group were delighted to be part of the Oscott Warrd Advisory Board which gave advice on how to allot funding to various applications for the Community Chest 100k for Oscott.
Although this money is less then in previous years and we could do with 10 times more, at least we believe this money will be spent wisely.

Youngsters in the are will have the bulk of the money to help find them things to do.
For example the Tree Hurst Community Centre on the Beeches Estate, gets 2K. Base KS KettleHouse Road, get 8K,
The Link Play Group Lambeth Road gets 5K, The Bandywood Families Project (they help find youngsters things to do and give them advice) get 25K.
10k will go to youth activities in the area. £1500 will go to a Police initiative to take children horse riding in the summer.Sundridge School and Kingsland School also get small grants.

Other grants include-

A project to modernise the Perry Common Library gets 13K this year and a guarantee of more money next year.
Pensioner tax Benefit take up initiative's, get 6K
There will be 15K to keep the Oscott Environmental Warden.
£800 will go to to the North Oscott Forum for organising a coach trip to the Black Country museum
There will also be small grants for a number of the community organisations in Oscott.

Crimes such as shed brake in and opportunist burglaries often increase during the summer months. This is often because doors and windows are left open.

1. Lock your doors and windows when you go out. (Lock down stairs windows at night)
2. Lock your sheds and garages
3. Keep rear access way gates locked.
4. Keep garden gates locked and maintain your garden fence
5. Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your property if you go on holiday.

ALDRIDGE ROAD TRAFFIC CALMING PETITON TO BE PRESENTED TO COUNCIL

A petition containing hundreds of names, requesting sensible traffic calming measures be introduced to the Aldridge Road, will be presented to the Council today (July 8th) by Councillor Keith Linnecor.
Nigel Quinn Chair of the Oscott Residents Association along with his members and members of the public, have worked hard collecting these signatures and hope the council will now listen to residents and take action.
"What is needed is new signs, speed awareness signs like those now on the College Road, new traffic controls and possible speed cameras says Nigel"

MORE DISABLED DROP CURBS NEEDED

George Hough the Oscott Disability Group Chairman has called on the Birmingham City Council Transportation department to install more disability drop curbs in the Oscott Ward.
George said " We have made a good start on this issue but there are many more of these crossings needed and I have supplied the Transportation department with a list which need doing. Disabled residents need to be able to get on with their lives and keep as mobile as possible."
Locations such as Courtenay Road, Goodway Road and Burford Road are just some where requests have been made.

HELP KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE SUPPORT 20MPH ZONES NEAR SCHOOLS

The ORG are getting behind Councillor Keith Linnecor and his attempts to get the Council to introduce 20MPH Zones around schools in Oscott. This is a worth wile thing to do as it should help safe guard our children when they go to school. Motorists should slow down and the Police if they are introduced should enforce these zones.
THe Council need toget on and do this ASAP in our view.

TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT SAY NO TO GREENHOL TRAFFIC LIGHTS

The Council Transportation department have now yet again said no to our pleas for traffic lights to be placed at the Greenholm Road, Aldridge Road junction.
ORA feel this is a disgrace, how many more accidents will it take before they put human being before simple cost.
As far as we are concerned enough is enough, any accident at this junction from now on must be put at the door of the Birmingham City Council.
WE would also like to thank residents and Councillors who have supported us over this issue.

GREENHOLM ROAD / ALDRIDGE ROAD JUNCTION

The above named junction must be on of the most dangerous in the area. I have seen a number of accidents my self and have written to the Transportation department asking for improvements to this junction.
I know we have the support of Councillor Linnecor(Oscott) who has also written to the Transportation department asking for action to be taken on a number of occasions, but like my self he has received no positive news from them.

ORA members and residents often ask me what can be done about this junction?. I think Residents who are concerned about this junction could write to Councillor Len Gregory (who is the Councillor with responsibility for Road Safety in Birmingham for the Conservative Party's Council Administration) C/o the Birmingham City Council, Victoria Square Birmingham. Perhaps if enough residents did, he might get the message?

LOCAL SCHOOL NEEDS TO GET ITS ACT TOGETHER

The Great Barr School in the view of a number of local residents, needs to get its act together.
They need to get a litter policy in place in order for nearby residents not to have to suffer the constant problems onf litter, for example.
Also the School needs to create more drop off parking areas in its grounds (something Councillors Keith Linnecor and former Councillor John Cotton put to them years ago). They should use some of their old play ground area for staff and student parking for example. The current situation where staff and students continue to obstruct residents drives and the parking out side residents homes all day has to stop. Residents are calling on the Council to make the Great Barr School authories take these matters more seriously.

BOOTHS LANE CARRIAGE WAY

The Oscott Residents Association has been contacted by a number of road users who are concerned about the state of the Booths Lane unadopted carriageway. The pot holes have returned with a vengeance and so has the flooding.

One of the so called selling points made by the developer and his supporters! re the new houses in Booths Lane was that he would get the road repaired when he had his planning application agreed.

Many felt the garantee to get the necessary road repairs done should have been done regardless of the outcome of the planning process but there you are.

Now months after the Planning committee with a few notable acceptations, those who refused to sell out, gave the developer the go ahead, there has still been no repairs done to the carriage way in Booths Lane. How long will we have to waite.?

The FOQNR members were in action again on Saturday 24th May.

JUST SOME THOUGHTS.

Although I agree ORG should work with our local Councillors we do need to make sure they are more aggressive with the Council administration. We all know that this Council needs a kick up the bum at times and we need our councillors to do this.
However we residents groups can always do this ourselves if necessary.
For example I believe in calling a spade a spade, the Transportation department under this Council is hopeless, drop curbs are too expensive and the state of our roads are awful in places.
We residents groups should make it plain to the Council this is not good enough.
The Council tax is far to high for the service we receive just look at the mess they are making of the green bag collection! As for discipline in our schools. Council inspectors should be out in force.

The Government also needs to get its own act together, the 10p tax fiasco and the amount of bureaucracy in our NHS are just a couple of things that need to be sorted out.

DISABLED DROP CURBS STILL NEEDED

The Oscott Disability Group along with the Oscott Residents Association, are continuing to call on this Councils Transportation department, to take disabled residents rights seriously.
For example disabled residents (and mothers with prams for that matter) should not be forced into the road, because we can not get our Wheel chairs/ scooters on and off the pavement due to the lack of disabled drop curbs. Thankfully we have a champion in Councillor Keith Linnecor who is constantly approaching the Transportation department about this matter on our behalf.

ELECTION RESULT

ORG would like to congratulate Councillor Green on his election on Thursday. We hope when learns the ropes and gets to know the area better we will be able to work with him. This would of course have to be in a non political way.
ORG were sorry to see Former Councillor John Cotton loose his seat as he had always worked well with all our groups and was always available to listen to our concerns. He worked hard for residents in the area also. He can console himself that he was only defeated because of national issues and if the tide turns we are sure he will return in some way. We all wish John the very best of luck and once again thank him for his efforts over the years.

ALDRIDGE ROAD AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN

Many resident are complaining about speeding traffic on the Aldridge Road. Following representations from the Oscott Residents Association, the Police recently carried out some speed survey work between the Boars Head and Greenholm Road and it is hoped that this may help convince the Councils Transportation department to do something to deal with the problem?

UNWARRANTED ATTACK ON COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE

There was an completely unwarranted attack on one of the Oscott Resident Groups leading members in the letter pages of the Great Barr Observer, (April 25th) by a local resident (MrF).
This resident condemned a previous letter by Mr Quinn (Chair Oscott Residents Association) published in the Great Barr observer, which pointed out that at a meeting, (see previous Post) Councilor Linnecor had informed members that they should get hold of an important Centro Document concerning Bus use in the future.
From the tone of the residents letter (we will not give him the satisfaction of naming him) political implications were made regarding Mr Quinns letter. To see that this was clearly nonsense ORG would recommend you read Mr Quinns letter for your self, (Great Barr Observer 18th April)
We tend to think in the letter attacking Mr Quinn, there is a give away line which talks about the resident who is complaining about Mr Quinn," only seeing Tory leaflets"
It is very sad when for what must be misguided "political reasons" those like Mr Quinn who try and help improve his local community, must have to put up with such nonsense. There were also comments made about the ORA not been known or advertised.
For the record there is information about the ORA in Local Libraries and Community Centres. There are also occasional news letters and of course this blog.
ORA and the ORG work with Local Councillors when it is appropriate but are non political and we are not under the control of the Local Council who ever may be in charge.

ORG EXECUTIVE REPORT APRIL 08

The ORG held its quarterly Executive meeting Saturday 3rd April. Councillor Keith Linnecor attended as our guest and informed us of the proposals by Centro to look at the future of the bus and its use in the West Midlands. Unfortunately there was only one Transforming Bus Travel in the West Midlands document available, as none of the community Groups had ever been sent one (is this consultation?). Councillor Linnecor went through the document with us and urged our groups requests these documents be sent to us by Centro so that we can look at them in more depth.
The lack of meaningful consultation by Centro is shameful. Thanks however to Councillor Linnecor now that the consultation period has been put back to June and we have been made aware of the document we can look into this issue. They have already got away with altering the 655 and the 376 bus routes we must keep any eye on them.
SOME OTHER ISSUES OF CONCERN.
ORG group leaders were also concerned about the lack of action by the Birmingham City Council with regards to speeding through out various parts of the ward. The Police have however been looking at the Aldridge Road near the Boars Head.
Although Anti social behavior is still a problem in some parts of the ward notably in Dormington Road,Policing in the area is generally quiet.
There is still however problems with cars using disabled drop curbs to drive and park on pavements in the area.

On a brighter note the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve is going from strength to strength and we would like to thank Councillor Keith Linnecor for his efforts as chair. Tree planting has been completed, bird and bat boxes are expected to be put up later this year and there will be wild flower planting and litter picking sessions also later this year.
There is another joint community groups leaflet being put out in parts of the ward and this has details of this blog on it.
The joint Saturday morning community drop in sessions every Saturday at the 610 Community Centre are still going well and a number of issues are been raised by local residents.

THE OSCOTT RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

The Oscott Residents Association are a group of residents who have the interests of Oscott at hart. We have no political allegiance but recognise to get things done we need to work with our local councillors. We appreciate that they have been very helpful in the past.
We do not accept the notion of artificial boundaries in the Oscott Ward the way some community groups have and we try to represent all Oscott residents. We are independent of the Council authorities and often criticise some of the dafter things they do.
We meet most Saturday mornings at 10.30am at the 610 Community Centre along with other community groups (ORG) and we often discuss issues of importance with local residents at these sessions. If you would like to meet us why not pop along and have a cup of tea with us and tell us what you think about the Oscott area. We also help put out joint community group leaflets and help organise occasion public meeting. For more details please ring 464 1869

LOOKING AFTER WITTON CEMETERY

Since it opened in 1863, Witton Cemetery has provided the final resting place for many Brummies. Situated in the south eastern corner of the Oscott Ward, it includes two memorial gardens, several war memorials and an impressive Anglican chapel - the spire of which dominates the landscape for several miles.
The Friends of Witton Cemetery were formed following the recommendation's of a Scrutiny committee led by Oscott Councillor Keith Linnecor a couple of years ago, from amongst the local community.
These residents have since worked tirelessly to preserve the cemetery and to ensure a greater awareness of its unique history and place in the life of our city. They have now launched their own website, which provides an excellent insight into the story of the cemetery and some of the projects that the Friends are currently working on. For further information about the Friends of Witton Cemetary Tel 464 1869

THINGS TO DO IN OSCOTT FOR THE ELDERLY

A number of elderly residents in the Oscott area some times say there is very little for them to do. With this in mind the Oscott Elderly Residents Groups now meet most Saturday mornings at 10.30am at the 610 Community Centre for a chat and a cup of tea.

Elderly residents can also contact Age Concern who hold a meeting where various activities take place on a Thursday at 2pm at the Emanuel Church Kingstanding Road. The Kingstanding Pensioners Convention are looking for New member, they campaign on behalf of elderly residents in the area. There are also many other activities designed for the elderly in Oscott.

If you or any one you know would like to know more about what is happening in the Oscott area why not contact Maureen Byrnes (Chair OERG) via the Oscott Ward Support Officer 464 1869.

LOCAL ELECTIONS MAY 1st

ORG strongly recommends every adult in Oscott should vote at this years Local Elections and every other one for that matter.

Why vote? Because in a democracy that’s the way you can get things done and if you don’t vote you can not justify complaining about things.

Who should you vote for? ORG are none political but believe the needs of Oscott should come first. Read any election material you receive, Keep an eye open for press articles etc and think carefully about what the candidate has done or tried to do in the past for Oscott. Ask questions about what that candidate is trying to do for this area.

HELP PREVENT CRIME IN OSCOTT JOIN THE N.P.I

The Kingstanding Neighbourhood Police Initiative (N.P.I) is a small band of dedicated volunteers who work closely with the Police with the aim of creating a better understanding between them and the local community. In our view it is it is better to try and reduce crime than to simple complain about it.
We are looking for volunteers who can spend a couple of hours each month working from our room in the Kingstanding Police Station disseminating information out to our Street Coordinators and through them to the general public. (Police checks will be required for those wishing to carry out this important role)
The types of information we give and is crime trends in the local area and where applicable warnings to be on guard against a particular crime.
Our Volunteers (Sector Coordinators) also receive information from our Street Coordinators which they pass on to the Police intelligence section in order to try and reduce crime in the area.
The NPI with the aid of Councillor Keith Linnecor and the Police also on occasions carry out crime prevention leafleting and organise public meeting where the Police can inform the public of their activities and also listen to any the problems residents have.

If you would like more information please Telephone 464 1869 for details.

STOP CARS PARKING IN BUS BAYS

The Oscott Disability Group think it is about time the Council and the Police sorted out those motorists who park in bus bays. Many of the buses in the Oscott area now have the kneeling facility which means they can dip down at the specially constructed curbed bus bays in order for those in wheel chairs (or those parents using the bus with a pram) to get off the bus more easily. When the bus can not get to the curb at a bus bay because a motorist has parked there it means the wheel chair user (or those with a pram) have trouble getting off the bus.
This is why the ODG are calling for tougher action to be taken against these motorists.

HAVE YOUR SAY DAY REPORT

The Oscott have your say day took place on Saturday. There were a number of the Oscott community groups represented they, including the Oscott Residents group, The Oscott Elderly residents Group, The Oscott Disability Group, the Oscott Housing Liaison Board, The Neighbourhood Watch and NPI.

We spoke to many local residents from Oscott and the surrounding area about a number of subjects. These included anti social behaviour particularly in Kingstanding, the poor state of some of our roads and the need for more things to do for the kids.

On the day it self a large number of children were present and gave us their views.
It is to be hoped that the leaflets/ information given out by the Council officers and organisations like pertemps will be of value to residents.

The ORG would like to thank the Oscott Ward support Officer Mr Trevor and all those other officers who helped on the day. We would also like to recognise the help and support of our local Councillors Keith Linnecor, Barbara Dring and John Cotton who were there most of the day answering questions.

WE WANT ACTION ON TRAFFIC CALMING

We want to see more traffic calming measures in Oscott. We have no criticism for our local Oscott Councillors who work with us to try and get more traffic calming measures in the Oscott area and are not in power, but we are disgusted with the lack of action by the Council.
Birdbrook Road, Old Oscott Lane, Hawthorn Road, Southgate Road and Dunedin all are constantly over looked when it comes to traffic calming measures. We are not just on about speed humps by the way. There are a number of other ways to slow down traffic. Let’s see something being done.

KEEP OUR OSCOTT WARD SUPPORT OFFICER

The Oscott Residents Groups have recently learned that there may be a threat to the Oscott Ward Support Officer Post.
While we fully understand that the Council may need to cut back and indeed should cut back on a number of bureaucratic posts, but we are completely opposed too the possible loss of a Oscott Ward Support Officer.

This post has been one of the few successes in the new tear of local government (constituency) and the officers who work as ward support officers have a vital role in community capacity building. Ours also works hard helping ensuring the Oscott Ward receives funding for a number of local projects.

There are a large number of Council Post which are less needed then the Ward Support Officer post and of course there are now numerous consultants who are on fat cat wages working for the Council who no one would miss if they went tomorrow.

ORG are calling on the Birmingham City Council to retain the Oscott Ward Support Officer Post.

QUESLLET NATURE RESERVE TREE PLANTING SUCCESS

The Oscott Residents Groups weer delighted to help out the Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve with their recent tree planting project at the reserve. Over 200 shrubs have been planted along the Booths Lane boundary fence. This should go some way to help uplift the reserve and protecting wildlife in the future.

Also helping out on the day were Khalid Mahmood MP and Councillor John Cotton (Oscott), Councillor Kieth Linnecor who chairs the Friends of Queslett Nature Reserve and their committee are to be applauded for the work they have done.

OSCOTT DISABLED RESIDENTS CALL FOR MORE ROAD SAFETY MEASURES

The Oscott Disability Group is continuing to press the Birminghanm City Council to introduce more road and pavement safety measures in the Oscott area. This is not just about introducing the dreaded speed hump but more about sensible measures. For example a traffic lights at the Greenholm Road, Aldridge Road junction. Improvements to the Hawthorn Road pedestrian and traffic light system and erecting bollards near disabled bay drop curbs to ward off parked cars.
The Current Councils attitude to road and pavement safety has in our view been very poor for the last few years.

QUESLETT NATURE RESERVE COMMUNITY WATCH

With the help of the Police the Friends of the Queslett Nature Reserve are setting up a Reserve Community Watch.
After an initial training a group of memmers will from time to time patrol the reserve with Police CSO to act as a deterrent to anti social behavior on it and to help give reassurance to the users of the reserve.
or if you would like to take part in the many other activities of the F.O.Q.N.R please contact the Chair of the Friends of the Q.N.R Councillor Keith Linnecor on 360 6486.

QUESLETT ROAD ACTION IS NEEDED

ORG are appalled at the lack of action regarding much needed road safety measures for the Queslett Road. For most of last year we along with a number of other local resident Betty Whitehouse, Maureen Byre and of cause Councillor Keith Linnecor presented petitions and wrote various letters to authorities asking for action all to know avail.
We will continue to back Councillor Keith Linnecor in any attempts he makes to get the various authorities connected with the Queslett Road to take action and appeal to other polititions to do the same and to stop making childish political points over the matter as one did last year.
Let us all hope 2008 is the year something gets done.
